At Desert Bloom, preschoolers engage in meaningful reading and writing activities. They read class books, songs, and nursery rhymes, write in journals, write and illustrate their own stories, and send pictures and letters to classmates. They also make up stories and "read" picture books. Books and writing materials are readily available inside, outside, throughout the classroom and writing opportunities are incorporated into the dramatic play area. Daily phonological awareness activities include making rhymes, segmenting words, and identifying and manipulating sounds. These intentional activities feel like play and help preschoolers learn to read!
